Indicator Phrasing

English: Number and % of population (disaggregated by gender) who feel secure in the area where they live compared to last year

French: Nombre et % de la population (ventilée par sexe) qui se sent en sécurité dans la zone où elle vit par rapport à l'année dernière

What is its purpose?

The indicator aims to measure how people perceive security, which might be different from objective security data (e.g. number of violent deaths).

How to Collect and Analyse the Required Data

  • Questions related to security depend on context , so they have to be contextualised e.g. do you feel safe to go the market alone? To meet strangers? To go the fields alone? To go to the fields in groups? To travel to the neighouring village during day? To travel to the neighbouring village after dark?
  • The indicator compares the present situation with the feeling of security a year ago; so the question to ask is: do you feel more/less safe than last year (a year ago) to go to the market alone etc.
  • Area where they live: needs to be contextualised, can be village or wider area where they move around
